This document is a draft intended for the 0 A.D. Gameplay Manual

0 A.D. will in time allow you to control six factions representing six cultures represented at the peak of its civilisation, somewhere along the timeline of 500 B.C. to 1 B.C. The Alpha 4 release displays scenarios mainly with the Hellenes and the Celtic Civilisations, and one scenario with the Roman Republic. The Alpha 5 release will include the new Iberic cvilization.

Hellenes

Controlling the representatives from the Hellenic region, the player has the power of Sparta, Athens and Macedonia at his command. As the forebearers of philosophy, democracy, geometry, and hellenistic art and architecture, they are considered to be civic minded. However, do not discount the strength of their stone structures, the resolve of a hoplite in phalanx formation, or their historic ability to steal victory against seemingly insurmountable odds.

History

The Hellenes were a people famous today for their architecture, fighting ability, and culture.

The Hellenic peoples of the Dorian, Ionian, and Aeolian tribes swept into modern day Greece from 3000 BC to around 1100 BC in successive waves that eventually supplanted the previously established cultures of Mycenae and Minoan Crete. They were most active during the period of colonization that took place in the 7th and 6th centuries BC, the Greco-Persian Wars (499-449 BC), the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC), and the conquests of Alexander the Great (4th Century BC). Their civilization would endure until their final absorption by Rome in 146 BC

One aspect of the Hellenes that is most remembered today is their architecture, which was as much an art form as a science. Such buildings as The Parthenon in Athens and extensive complexes such as those found in Delphi, Olympia, and the Athenian Acropolis survive to modern times and continue to inspire architects and artists today as they have for centuries.

Another aspect of the Hellenes was their love for learning and their experimentations into science, medicine, philosophy, warfare, entertainment, and civics. Indeed, it was the Hellenes who created the foundations for scientific inquiry and conjured up the institution of democracy (rule of the people) to govern their cities.

The Hellenes lived their lives nestled in small city-states and constantly warred against one another. This made them natural fighters, which came in handy when a larger outside force threatened invasion, only uniting to face their common foe. The quintessential warrior of the era, the hoplite, was deployed by the Hellenes in the phalanx formation for battle. This virtual tank of an army dominated the Mediterranean for centuries.

Some famous Hellenic figures were: Themistocles, the hero of the decisive naval battle of Salamis (479 BC); Lysander, Navarchos (admiral) of the Spartan fleet in the Peloponnesian War; Pericles, Athenian statesman who guided Hellas into the Classical Age (5th Century BC); King Leonidas of Sparta, who led the doomed stand at the battle of Thermopylae (480 BC) and Philip II, the Macedonian King that made Macedon a force to be reckoned with.

Some of the most influential battles were: Marathon in 490, Salamis in 480, Plataea in 479, Nemea in 394, Leuctra in 371, Chaeronea in 338, and Issus in 333.

In 0 A.D. the Hellenes will have strong slow infantry rooted firmly in the phalanx, and a better than average navy, based on their mercantile ways plowing through the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas.
