Considering that update-workspaces.sh only calls other build scripts and those are for the most part taken straight from upstream this is not our bug if those Makefiles (generated using eg autotools or cmake) do not adhere to MAKEFLAGS, which is something GNU Make should do anyways.
Apart from that if you go to the work of having a git commit hash, at least do the little bit of work to give us an SVN revision from that.
