Very minor point but this would ease setting up multiplayer games for people that don't know how to find their ip. This may well be supersceded if a discovery feature is added.

We can run an external web-based service fairly easily, which is likely the most reliable way to get the IP. Eventually we should have a proper lobby system, so this should probably be designed as a first step towards that, in terms of API and server design etc.

One caveat of this proposal is that it wouldn't help players setting up a LAN game (it could even confuse them). Maybe there should be separate LAN and Internet multiplayer modes to make the distinction clear. I still think this is useful for people who don't or can't use the lobby.

I just started playing 0ad, and do think it is very useful to show the local IP address for multiplayer LAN games.
Would you be happy if I try to find some time to implement it?

Depends on the proposed method to obtain the local IP (it must be supported for windows and unix).

Ah, I didn't think of different platforms. Since I don't have a windows computer at hand it would be hard to test for me, so I'll let it go.
This would need to be their external IP if they where behind a router as that is what people would need to connect to. So that could be not so easy to get... You could use UPnP or some external service to gather your external ip. But I do agree it may be nice to show!
