I clicked the Map editor icon in the start menu and:

Please let us know at http://trac.wildfiregames.com/ and attach the crashlog.txt and crashlog.dmp files.

No, I found another way to open the editor. I'm able to open the editor now using the following command:
"D:\0 A.D. alpha\binaries\system\pyrogenesis.exe" -editor

Not surprising, the crash had everything to do with timing/scheduling that wasn't fully in the game's control, so making even a small change would be enough to trigger it or prevent it :) Though I'm glad you have a workaround until A17.
