[PATCH] Finish skirmish map "Tuscan Acropolis (4)"

Reported by: saappolinario Owned by: Stan
Priority: Should Have Milestone: Alpha 19
Component: Maps Keywords: patch
Cc: Patch:

Description (last modified by LordParamount)

Absolutely impossible to get down of the plateau where each team begins the game. So impossible to play this map the way it is designed. No error message, it's just that we can't jump over the surrounding cliff !

Title : The skirmish map "Toscana Acropole"(4) doesn't work

Description : Seems impossible to get down of the platform where the game begin

comment:2 by Itms, 9 years ago

Also, we need more information: do you get an error message? Could you attach data, such as the mainlog? (see ReportingErrors and GameDataPaths)

Thanks in advance.

Confirmed, the map is not finished, see the attached screenshot. Most of the map is empty, almost no wood or other resources and indeeed, all players except the yellow one can't get down from their plateau.

That's probably the reason why the map isn't listed under default maps but ony when selecting "all maps".

But the general layout looks promising to me.

We could improve the situation incrementally. One commit could update the map description with a notice, one commit could just fix the plateau's and finally close the ticket after someone finished the map.

Well it is flagged as a demo map for a reason...

Can you attach the pmp file? (Patches don't really work well with binary files, and judging from the ticket players can't leave the plateaus.)

'PMP' file

Thanks for your work, the map looks appealing, I'm looking forward to play it and we should definitely include it. Here some proposals:

  • We need a thumbnail for that map, as it currently displays plain magenta and throws this error:
ERROR: CCacheLoader failed to find archived or source file for: "art/textures/ui/session/icons/mappreview/tuscan_acropolis_4.png"

  • Some more land animals would make the map more vivid and diverse.
  • If the teams are player 1+2 vs. player 3+4, then the players are placed between enemies, thus making it hard to trade. Instead they could be placed on the same side of the river.
  • Optional: Rotating the crocodiles might make sense, as they are all facing the same direction, which is quite unnatural. However this is only visible when revealing the map at the beginning, since they move around after some time. So this could be ignored.
  • Optional: Metal balancing: currently there are 2 metal piles side by side for each team. It is quite likely that only one player of each team gets access to that because you need a CC to have territorry there.

Also the metal pile close to red is a bit hidden by a tree in front of it.

Introducing 2 more metal piles on the map might be an idea and gives an incentive to build a CC on the other side. If we don't introduce more metal, then this map might become a "trade map" if played as 2v2, which is also a nice game mode, so its up to you.

  • There is one :) You just haven't picked it As leper said, binary files don't do good...
  • I will look into that, though I thought I had put enough already
  • Could be done
  • I'll think about that :)

Oh you are right. I thought that was just a screenshot, but that icon works perfectly.

Tested the map with elexis against two AIs.

Some issues/comments:

  • Player 1 (blue)'s metal mine is behind the CC and could be missed. Moving it somewhere might help. Also the starting units seem a bit close to the CC (at least with ptol the female citizens are nearly inside the CC).
  • There are no iber towers.
  • Should we team up players 1 and 3 vs 2 and 4? (Would make trading easier, though the current config is a bit fun against AIs it would likely prevent trade for multiplayer)
  • This is Tuscany, so the crocodiles do not make any sense. Still having some gaia critters seems nice, maybe wolves and some boars?
  • Having fish in the river is somewhat nice, but there isn't really enough space for a dock and fishing ships to get them (and if you manage to build both the ship will likely get stuck). Maybe make them actors?
  • Near Player 2 (red)'s base (between that plateau and the mountain) is a player owned tree. (North of the metal mine)
  • The trees along the southern road are actors, as are some on the north side of the river. (There may be more, those should be real trees.)

Nice map!

comment:13 by elexis, 9 years ago

The balancing of the map would improve if the players in the south could gather the trees on that alley. The metal mines should be divided imho.

There is at least a second tree owned by player 2 (also near the metal mines).

The map is still listed as a demo map. The description should be updated, since there are no treasures (at least I didnt find any).

That iberian players don't have the initial towers / walls is not really a problem. On other skirmish maps they also don't have them.

Was fun to play, thx!

  • Added Walls
  • Added Treasures
  • Removed Crocodiles
  • Added more boars
  • Fixed Actors/Objects (Trees)

comment:15 by Lionkanzen, 9 years ago

Can add more deers or huntable animals?

comment:16 by elexis, 9 years ago

Milestone: BacklogAlpha 19
Priority: Nice to HaveShould Have
  • Iberian walls fixed indeed, nice
  • everywhere I look at least some animals, not too many new animals required
  • player positioning fixed too
  • trees owned by players also seem to be fixed, see cat Tuscan\ Acropolis\ \(4\).xml | grep tree -A 2 | grep '<Player>' | sort | uniq
  • description and keywords ok
  • amount of wood ok
  • the 2 metal piles you added are nice too

I'd say its good to go

Make Tuscan Acropolis skirmish map playable. Changes by stanislas69. Fixes #2970.

Keywords: review removed

Looks good, thanks. I renamed the preview image to be in line with all the others (the _N files are remainders from before we had skirmish maps (or before some of those were converted to those)), and added default teams.

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
