#625 closed defect (fixed)

Minimap is not flush with left side of screen in widescreen or non-standard aspect ratios.

Reported by: Jay Weisskopf Owned by: brian
Priority: If Time Permits Milestone: Alpha 11
Component: Art & Animation Keywords: gui, minimap
Cc: Patch:

Description

The minimap is not flush with the left side of the screen on my widescreen (16:10) monitor. There is extra space between the left edge of my screen and the minimap. This can also be seen when the game is windowed by resizing the game to a non-standard aspect ratio.

As you can see in this Screenshot: http://www.moddb.com/games/0-ad/images/alpha-ii-preview2 the GUI is centered rather than flush left/stretched to fit the window. It still sounds a bit strange if it's just on the left side there's some space though.

Ah, okay. I hadn't noticed that since I didn't select any units. I guess it looks okay when the full GUI is being rendered, but it still looks fairly odd when it's just the minimap by itself. I'm not really sure what to suggest now.

It make "look weird" that way, but what about gameplay, which is the most important aspect to think about? Things "looking weird" or being different than other games are easy to get used to, so that's not a proper criticism. :) Does it affect gameplay negatively? Does it affect gameplay positively? For me, the GUI (and minimap) being toward the center of a widescreen gives a HUD-feel, placing the important elements where my cursor usually is, which is the center of the screen. Other opinions are welcome.

Well, as far as gameplay is concerned, it may have a negative impact. Having the minimap where it's at breaks apart what would otherwise be a contiguous viewing area. I'm sure game companies spend a lot of time thinking about UI layout and they probably have good reasons for keeping the minimap nestled in a corner.

If it were up to me, I'd move the minimap back to the corner and keep the command strip in the middle. Alternatively, I'd keep the minimap at its current spot but leave the command strip on at all times to preserve visual balance. I only reported the issue because it looked aesthetically bizarre enough that I figured it was an oversight. I'm pretty apathetic about it otherwise.

Leaving the center area continuously on also obstructs the viewing area. It's not a win-win.

Still working on the design - the current method will be fine for Alpha 3

Resolution: fixed
Status: newclosed

Based on recent discussions the default GUI will remain centered. A split option may be produced later, and that will be flush with the left and right edges of the screen.
