Did you consider an open source forum (e.g. phpBB), to follow the spirit of 0 A.D.?

I personally would use MyBB (​http://mybb.com). It's free and usually much less patch releases than phpBB (because less security holes I guess). But we won't migrate to another forum. (not yet anyway)

The spirit of 0 A.D. is to use proprietary tools when they're useful (Windows, Visual Studio, Photoshop, 3ds Max, whatever the audio people use, EC2, etc), as long as we aren't locked in and are using open formats that are also compatible with open source tools, so I don't think IPB is a spiritual problem :-)

(I think the main reason to stick with it is that upgrading to a new IPB version is less effort for us and less disruptive to users than migrating to a different system, and IPB works fine and isn't expensive enough to be worth that effort/disruption.)
