I'm closing this as 'fixed' since post r24480 / ​Phab:rP24480 there is an explicit notion of "default formation" and it probably makes more sense to choose that (which is indeed what's done). (could have been 'invalid' but I'm erring towards 'fixed' here)

One can choose a default formation that not all units support, but one ought not to :p
