Cursor behavior is broken when starting 0 A.D. in a separate X server

I ran 0 A.D. with the following command in a tty:
xinit 0ad -- :1 vt$XDG_VTNR
or, equivalently
xinit xterm -- :1 vt$XDG_VTNR
0ad
I start a new skirmish. What happens:
- moving the cursor to the edge of the screen doesn't scroll the map
- one can click on the unit, and it gives a sound, but the UI doesn't change
- one can right click on the destination, the unit gives a sound, but the UI doesn't change at all.
- after exiting the game in the second approach, one can't get focus inside xterm

For me, Debian 11, NVidia graphics card, at r25848 it doesn't show 0 A.D. at all.
