Description
There are two way to select an AI type: with the 'Player Name' combo box and through the 'c' button -> 'AI Player' combo box. The latter should probably be removed.

I like the way it is now, clicking the (c)onfig button is like showing an "advanced" menu but you should be able to change the AI there as well.

Agreed. The 'c' button has a purpose (AI descriptions). And eventually it might support more controls like difficulty (if an AI is made that supports that).
Note:
See TracTickets
for help on using tickets.
The ability to choose another AI in the latter should perhaps be removed, but the 'c' button still has a purpose, for now in that it provides a description, and for later in that AIs might/will/should have settings. Though, after having read a description you may want to change to another AI, or be able to take a look at all descriptions without having to go back and forth, so I think it can stay.
