Description

Using rally-point for setting trade-routes is not really convenient as the default trading goods is always metal, while we usually do not want all trade routes to have the same goods. So we have to setup individually which goods a trader will take. The long term solution could be to modify the gui of the setting of the trading rally-point to also set the desired trading goods, but we can also modify the default to not always choose metal. I can think of two possibilities:

  • a cycling choice: each new trader would take as default one of the 4 possible goods, cycling on them.
  • a "less resource" choice: each new trader would take as default the goods which is less abondant at the trader's creation.

I think it's debatable how useful this would be, but I don't like either of the suggested solutions :) The cycling won't really be intuitive, whereas having a consistent default and having to set the resources manually on each trader is pretty obvious. The second option isn't any good, because trade is a long-term action, and what is needed at the time of trader creation might not be needed the next turn, let alone later in the game.

This feels like trying to think for the player which is not typically going to turn out well.

It might be better to have a visualisation of how many traders are on which resource. Maybe in the market, or in the trader selection. So you can change a trader to your right resource.

The point is that, presently, trading-route rally-points are not really useful because you still have to catch the trader when it's produced to set its trading goods. And usually, when you ProductionQueue several traders, it is not to have all of them having the same goods. That's why my preference would be to a cycling default. Of course, the best solution would be to have some additionnal gui where you could select on which resources you should cycle.

Then, when you are in need of a specific item, you would have to do what you do now, i.e. catch the trader when it's produced to affect it to what you need.

Visualisation of how many traders are on which resource would be quite useful, but I think is not directly connected to the point here.
