#2736 new task

Firing range techs should enlarge the vision range too.

Description

This is because there's a chance that the firing range becomes bigger than the vision range by default, which leads to strange advantages to the AI (as that has complete vision), and the techs also aren't very effective, as you can't fire on stuff outside of your vision range.

In 15656:

Change the vision range together with the attack range for some techs. Refs #2736. Patch by serveurix

The techs are changed, but the same changes should apply to upgrades to elite and advanced.

But this depends on #2620

But wouldn't it better to increase the vision range (70 instead of the present 50) for all units, rather than conditionning it to the attack range ? with this patch, archers will have a huge advantage, being able to see and attack out of LOS of the attacked units. Futhermore, this "attack out of LOS" is not at all realistic for the 0ad time, and I would rather keep it for certain circonstances with a real tactical value: the improved range when in height is such an example, but we could think of others in the future like reduced vision range to see units hidden in a forest.

Replying to mimo:

If we want it to be realistic, vision range should be roughly the same for all foot units and chariots (perhaps a bit bigger for archers, which could have been selected on that criteria in ancient armies), and should be a lot bigger than the firing range. Vision range for cavalry should be bigger than the foot unit's vision range, africant elephant's vision range a bit bigger than cavalry's, asian elephant a bit bigger than african elephant's, and syrian elephant's vision range should be the biggest (this is only for living units, let aside ships and catapults). The smallest vision range would probably be the dogs' vision range.

I didn't mean this kind of realism which would not improve the gameplay, but only the fact to be able to attack while the enemies do not see you which was not possible during 0ad time frame. And anyway, I should not have mentionned this word "realism" as it always lead to diverging discussions while it was just a minor point in my comment :)
