This was caused by me having loaded a20 /mods/public but a19 /mods/mod ~ tsk tsk

Thanks for finding that out!
As you mounted the alpha 19 mods/mod directory, the markForPluralTranslation wasn't found, thus triggering an error when placing the tower. Instead of correctly pushing the GUI notificaton (about minimum distance) the tower was placed therefore.

Someone with ubuntu 16.04 should make an ooslog with the attached patch compiled on this adapted map+replay. Turn 5330-5332 would be interesting to compare to my ooslog in this archive.
