It's a crash in an OpenGL call, like #1006 and #1399. It's unknown whether this is a subtle problem in the game or a driver bug, as it only affects a small subset of users. Make sure your Intel GPU drivers are updated. Also, you're using Alpha 8 and we just released Alpha 10 last week, while I doubt this specific problem will be solved, it's worth a try :)
You might also try changing some graphics settings and see if that helps.
I had installed the 10 alpha and it had the same bugs e.g. flickering menu screen image & crash on map loading. Confusingly I attached the wrong log files (or perhaps the log files remained from the previous installation). I am trying your suggestions. Thanks for your help.

Oh the log files location changed in Alpha 10, see this page. It may be the same issue, or maybe not, you might as well attach the new logs when you find them, and I'll check to be sure :)
